Candy or College?
?
The teachers have been met, school supplies are bought, and lunches are being made daily. A new school year has begun; the scared kindergartener, the excited elementary child, the confused junior high student, and the âmatureâ high school student all made it through the first day of school.
?
The children are back to âworkâ learning, reading, writing, math, athletics, band, whatever your child is involved in, rewarding their hard work is very important.? Report card time is a great opportunity to see their success and acknowledge their hard work. ?For some families a report card reward is going to dinner, to the movies, or getting to buy a special toy, but for many families money is a great reward.?
?
Since going to school is a childâs âjobâ doesnât it make sense to pay them for their achievements? This has always been my thought but I, like many parents, began to get annoyed by the candy and toys that were being bought with the âreport card moneyâ. As parents we spend a lot of time considering the pros and cons of each decision we make. The âreport card moneyâ decision is no different. Maybe we shouldnât pay our kids for good grades, since?the money turns into?junk that?winds up in the trash, âthe pride they feel for a good grade is payment enoughâ. Maybe I should just take them out to eat at their favorite restaurant or go to a movie, they would like that. After reviewing all pros and cons, I have found a way to continue rewarding good grades with money, but instead of handing them the money, it will be put it in a college fund. This will not only reward hard work but it will also help me later when their good grades get them into?an expensive college.
