Almost every parent wants his child to achieve lots and lead a fulfilled life. If you are concerned about your child’s education, encourage him to do his homework without any delay and to read lots. It doesn’t really matter if you are thinking about 11 plus exam: good habits will stay with your child for life and will always help him. Being serious about his work (including school work) will create a serious, responsible grown-up, who will be able to look after his life.

From my personal experience I can admit that reading from an early age encourages children to learn more about the world they live in and to become more curious. You don’t have to know everything. It’s enough to tell your son or daughter: “I may not know the answer to this question, but I know lots of reference books, where you will find it.” In the internet age it’s easier to look at various websites, but reading is still very important If not the most important. Your child will not be able to grasp anything or do an online test, if he can’t read fluently. If he doesn’t read he will be struggling with spelling and writing a simple word? will be a tough task. You can, of course, use a spell check provided with software,? but during the exam there won’t be any of that available. It’s worth to learn it and rely on your own knowledge.

It seems to me it doesn’t matter which school your child attends :? private or state, none of them prepares for 11 plus, so it is up to you to do something about it. My children did not attend a private school and I had to take on the task? of preparing them for 11 plus myself. My friend’s daughter went to a private school. Still she wasn’t prepared for 11 plus.

My opinion: the curriculum is totally inadequate to what is expected of children during the exam. What’s more schools are not interested in preparation for 11 plus.

What’s lacking in education?

  1. Mental maths

Children are not able to perform basic arithmetic operations:

They don’t know time tables;

They can’t divide;

They can’t calculate quickly in their heads and so on.

Solution: They should receive a math sheet to be completed at home every day.

  1. More English

Children don’t write many compositions:

Spellings are rarely checked

Grammar is not taught

They don’t receive any writing assignments

Solution:? They should receive some tasks to be completed at home: write 1-2 sentences about.., find a synonym of the word etc. Year 5 students should have a special meeting to find out who wishes to go for 11 plus and who does not. Interested parties should be given more work preparing them towards the exam.

It seems to me that education focuses only around? art and PE. Everybody has an obsession with healthy eating and sports. Let’s face it: if mother can’t be bothered to cook a? proper meal at home, children will be eating junk food and will be getting fatter. I understand that many women work. I do too. But it is not so difficult to cook a healthy meal the day before to be reheated on the day. Fresh salad can be provided daily. And you don’t have to go mad about sports. How many of kids are going to be a top class footballer? And how many would profit from knowing maths and speaking correctly? Unfortunately, maths is not cool, because the education system doesn’t make it “cool”. We admire celebrities with their gossips and extravaganza, because they earn lots…

I became disabled not because I did something. I simply turned ill. It can happen to any of you. If it wasn’t for the fact that? I am well educated, I wouldn’t know what to do know.

Instead I run two companies and help my children achieve their dreams. They can ask me about everything and I know where to look for help. And I am able to help them without spending a fortune…I don’t need to speak any more.

  1. There are only two options once you decide with your child that he wants to go for 11 plus:

a)??????????? Start your preparation at home using all available resources

b)??????????? Hire a tutor

What I need to stress is: your child has to decide what he really wants. There is? no point for parents to have an ambition when your child is not capable or doesn’t want to go to grammar school. Just because you are a doctor or always wanted to be one, doesn’t mean that your child wants to be a doctor too.?

You should be able to determine the learning ability of your child. If your child is bright, grammar school makes sense. But if he is not, does it really make sense to push him for grammar school where he is going to be underachieving all the time? Is your child bright but lazy? Can you motivate him? Will you have time, patience and perseverance to prepare him to the best of his ability for the exam?

If not, start asking around who recommends whom to find a good tutor.

My personal opinion: you don’t need a tutor to prepare your child for 11 plus, but you do need to spend some time buying various books, collecting online resources and most of all sitting with your child and helping him. It’s enough to ask him to do a paper of maths, check it, explain difficulties, do some online tests. You have to give all your support and encouragement.
