The effects of ADHD are often overlooked and the impact on an ADHD child's life and learning cannot be underestimated. If the condition persists into adulthood, then ADHD effects are even more devastating, causing lost work hours, more inefficiency and disastrous relationships. As well as the effects of ADHD on the individual person and on society, there is also the problem of ADHD medication. Robert Findling is a director of child psychology at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and he has expressed worry that "there is such a paucity of long-term effectiveness or safety data". This expresses so well the worries of many parents who are looking for alternative ADHD remedies and treatment.

From experiments carried out at school, it seems that one of the ADHD effects is to double the possibility of repeating the grade and will result 10% lower grade on reading and math tests. It is interesting to note too that physical health problems such as asthma or allergies has much less of an impact on a child's progress than ADHD.

Another one of the overlooked effects of ADHD is that well to do and better off families may actually try to avoid the whole question of treatment as they feel that there is stigma attached to this condition and that having an ADHD label may well be an added disadvantage to the child. The shallow thinking behind this sort of reasoning has alarmed many health authorities as ADHD, if left untreated, can have many negative outcomes on a person's life and that person will pay a high price in being at increased risk of drug addiction, car accidents and a thwarted career path.

In many cases, ADHD children of lower income families can rely on getting treatment through the Medicaid schemes. This is certainly a reversal of the normal trend in other areas.

The effects of ADHD on the family unit itself are often overlooked. Siblings may suffer some trauma if there are outbursts and inappropriate behavior. Relationships between spouses are strained and there is a higher rate of divorce and separation. It has been shown time and time again that behavior modification programs are the most effective treatment in the long term and give permanent results, helping the ADHD child to take responsibility for his or her actions. An alternative to psychostimulants which is now gaining enormous popularity is the homeopathic ADHD remedy which has no side effects or health risks and is the perfect combination when tried with behavior therapy.
